This limited edition Matchbox Collectible was produced in 2003 to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Ford Motor Company and was the final version made from this tooling before the Matchbox Collectibles division closed down their headquarters in Mount Laurel, NJ. Last year I spoke with one of the designers I collaborated with to see if the tooling for these was still around for possible use for a Bronco 50th Anniversary diecast. Unfortunately, it seems much of that tooling no longer exists so this may be the last version ever made from those molds.
My involvement with these Matchbox Collectibles began in 1998 when I was selling Bronco parts at the Carlisle Truck Nationals show. I was approached by a couple of designers from Mattel about a new project they were working on which was a series of detailed 1:43 scale early 4x4 vehicles. I worked with them and provided them with two of our real Broncos (a 1966 U13 Roadster and a 1974 Sport) as well as my collection of original Dealer literature as reference materials.
This was the thrid and final Bronco diecast that resulted from that effort. I became a dealer and sold dozens of cases of of these shortly after they were released. I recently pulled out a few mixed cases of remaining new old stock which I had stashed away and am now offering these for sale again.
When these were released years ago they were by far the most detailed Bronco collectible made to date. Even today and after a huge wave of new Bronco collectibles by other companies, these are still by far one of the best made yet.
